Life has been super crazy, but crazy with lots of fun stuff, like our 1st Family Camping trip of the Summer! We camped at Cunningham State Falls Park. I had wanted to go camping there when I heard about it last year as there is a great hike with a waterfall at the end and I love hiking and waterfalls! It ended up being a perfect location for us to camp and visit Gettysburg for the 150th Anniversary celebration taking place that week. It was super nice as it was only an hour and half away and we headed out on Friday afternoon with hopes of beating some bad thunderstorms that were rolling in. The park is beautiful and we had a great tent site! The first thing we did was set up the tent in case the storm hit. The boys love to help!
We bought a new tent this year as the one we had last year didn’t hold up very well.
This one is huge and the boys loved it!
We are really basic tent campers. Other then the tent and two cooking things we never really invested any money in camping equipment and funny its always worked out great. Here is our very simple tent site.
After everything was set up we set off for our hike. The main idea behind this camping trip was the Gettysburg reenactment we were going to on Saturday, so we really just had Friday evening to check out the park. We decided to take the longer Cliff Trail, and we were so glad we did it was awesome!
Much of it was up hill, there was some climbing, jumping etc.. and just super fun and challenging at times.
The kids loved all the huge boulders!
This one was huge!! And it wasn’t even the biggest we would see!
Jax and I sort of took the lead as Mike and Ethan were deeply engaged in a Civil War conversation.
Love these Goons!! And the more time they are outside the better!
The Hike was fantastic!! And then we got to the Falls and got adventurous!! We crossed the small river and climbed up the rocks. Ok I LOVE Rock climbing!!!
My boys were a bit slower than I was:)
Self Portrait, why because we are dorks.
Jax was a bit nervous on the first large rock he really had to climb (mommy had to half pull) and balance on, but after that he was fine.
Mike and the boys.
Me with the boys!
View from the top part looking down to the observation dock, which you are suppose to stay on, which clearly we didn’t. You can see the little stream with rocks we had to hop across:)
We climbed a bit higher and the boys liked playing in the water.
It was great weather for the hike, and we decided to take the short path back to the tent site as we needed to get our campfire going!
Jax was a bit tired so Daddy gave him a lift.
Now for the fun part! Campfire, stories, roasted hot dogs and smores! We are pretty new to camping and starting the fire especially with as wet has it had been and with the on and off again sprinkles, but we pulled together as a family, and finally figured it out and enjoyed an incredible night around the campfire!
Us just chillin!
Mike roasted hot dogs for the boys and I cooked baked beans over the open flame. It was great!
We sat around for hours and told made up ghost stories and just talked. As night fell the boys went to catch fireflies. We had a this great little path and clearing behind our campsite that was perfect for collecting kindling and catching fireflies.
I had packed some sparklers and the boys were super excited to light those up. Ok, I was too! I love sparklers!
And if we had not had enough fun already it was time to make smores!! Yum!!
The boys quickly passed out that night and even slept in the next morning. Mike and I slept ok given that our air mattress apparently has a hole and kept deflating. The storm even held off, which was great!
It was a perfect family day with no interruptions, no distractions just us as a family having quality time, sitting around talking, laughing, learning new things about each other, working together as a family and just enjoying being together. As much as I never thought I would love camping, I LOVE camping and the way it brings my family together in the most simple way.
We are looking forward to going back to Cunningham Falls later this year for a longer weekend with more time spent at the camp ground.
Saturday was spent at Gettysburg, and what a blast that ended up being! That post will be up next:)
